Ask ten RV owners whether covered storage is worth it and you will get ten answers. In this part of California the honest answer depends less on rainfall than on how much sun exposure your RV can take and how often you use it.
What the Sun Does
UV exposure is the main enemy here. It chalks fiberglass, fades decals, dries out rubber seals, and cracks vent covers. A motorhome parked in the open for years without care will show it, particularly on the roof and the driver's side.
That does not automatically mean you need a roof over it. Regular washing, a quality wax, treated seals, and vent covers do a great deal of the same work at a fraction of the cost.
What Open Storage Gets You
Open storage is less expensive, easier to maneuver into, and available in far more sizes — including the long fifth wheels and toy haulers that do not fit under most covers. On a paved, fenced, well-lit lot, an open space is a perfectly good home for an RV that gets used regularly and maintained.
- Lower monthly cost
- Easier access for long units
- Wide aisles and simple maneuvering
- Plenty of availability year-round
How to Decide
If your RV is newer, rarely used, or has already started showing oxidation, invest either in cover or in a maintenance routine. If you camp often and keep up with washing and seals, an open space on a well-kept lot is usually the smarter spend.
